An autumnal low blew over the country last night (November 22nd) and brought with it the fourth strongest gust of wind recorded at Bracken House this year. At 17:29, a gust of 35.7 mph was recorded from direction 225° (south west). This has only been beaten during an early January storm from the 3rd until the 5th when maximum gusts on the three days were 41.4 mph, 39.1 mph and again 41.4 mph.

Following the 12.0 millimetres of rain the previous day, another 9.8 millimetres fell on the 22nd. Although a sizeable amount, this total has been bettered on six occasions in 24 hour periods this year alone. The total rainfall so far this month now stands at 38.8 millimetres, still well below the average for the month of 63.8 millimetres, but up on last year’s total of 25.2 millimetres.

So far, there have only been three drier months this year than November, and they are, surprisingly, January, February and March.
