The highlight of day four of my visit was a round trip from Tromsø to Skjervøy using buses and ferries to Skjervøy and returning via the Hurtigurten ferry. The trip cost NOK 600 and lasted for over eight hours.

Before the round trip, I wandered around the shops looking for a present to take back for Sandra. I settled on a silver necklace from a local jewellers. I also sampled some Norwegian ice cream and took a trip on Tromsø’s only train. Tromsø isn’t connected to the Norwegian rail network, which doesn’t go this far north, so I had to make do with a street train which took a 30 minute trip around the town.

After waffles in the hotel, it was time to head to the bus station for the round trip, which started at 16:00. The first bus took us to the small village of Breivikeidet where the bus boarded a ferry for the 20 minute trip across Ullsfjorden to Svensby. From here, we went to Lyngseldet where we got off the bus to board a ferry which took us across Lyngsfjord to Olderdalen, a 40 minute journey. This gave me the chance to have a coffee and baguette in the on board cafe.

At the other side of Lyngsfjord, another bus was waiting to take us to Skjervøy, although we did have to change buses again part way through the journey. The whole journey from Tromsø to Skjervøy was spectacular and we were surrounded by mountains for the whole of the journey.

At Skjervøy, we boarded Hurtigrutem ferry ‘Richard With‘ for the four hour cruise back to Tromsø. This part of the journey was very relaxing, sitting on deck with a pint watching snow capped mountains drift slowly by. As well as a couple of pints, which at NOR 62 were the cheapest I had in the entire holiday, I also had another snack in the cafe.

The journey into Tromsø, under the bridge, was memorable and gave me the opportunity to view the town from the fjord. We arrived in port at midnight after another superb day.
