Last night (7th March) I had to take the cat to the vets to have her put to sleep. She was suffering from acute renal failure, which kills 1 in 5 of older cats.
Puss Puss was here when we moved into the house in October 2008. She was almost wild and lived in one of the stables. She looked after herself and fed on mice. She was very timid and wouldn’t come near us at first.
Eventually, we started to tame her by giving her food and she came to trust us. She didn’t like coming in the house and would only come in if the door was left open so she could make a quick exit. She was very nervous of strangers and would run off if we had visitors.
She used to run to me when she saw me and would love to sit watching me round the chickens up at night. She seemed to think she was helping. She liked to sit watching the ponies and would sit with me on the bench and let me stroke her.
In her final months, her fur became very matted and she patiently sat there while I combed it all out. Her fur was just starting to grow back nicely when she suddenly stopped eating. This must have been when her kidneys started to fail.
Her weight dropped alarmingly and she struggled to get about. When it was obvious this was serious, I took her to the vet who took the humane option.
She died on the vets table at 6:40 pm. I will miss her.
