Today, the daylight hours at Bracken House exceeds the night hours. There are 12 hours, 2 minutes and 42 seconds of daylight today. The Vernal Equinox is not until Wednesday 20th March at 11:02 in Nottingham.
The reason for the difference between the two events is that the equinox is when the time between the geometric centre of the Sun rising above the horizon and setting below the horizon is exactly 12 hours. The daylight hours are taken from when the top of the Sun rises above the horizon, to when the top of the Sun goes below the horizon. Therefore the equinox day lasts a little longer than 12 hours.
The Autumnal Equinox is on Sunday September 22 2013 at 21:44 in Nottingham.
