The mild weather which greeted the New Year came to an abrupt end on January 10th when the warm air sitting over the country was replaced by colder air from the Continent. To further complicate the picture, a low pressure system moved into the south west bringing with it the chance of some significant snowfall.
At Bracken House, the average temperature on the 10th was -1.3°C, a stark contrast to the 10.1°C recorded a week previously. The temperature only briefly rose above freezing, peaking at 0.6°C at 12:23. The lowest temperature of -2.7°C was recorded at 22:11.
Another significant feature of the day’s weather was the almost complete lack of wind, the average wind speed being just 0.2 mph. The strongest gust was 4.6 mph recorded at 17:05. As a result of the lack of wind, fog lingered most of the day in the Erewash Valley, drifting up the hill to shroud Bracken House several times during the day.
