Having over 32,000 photos, I relied heavily on Aperture to sort and search my collection. Imagine my shock when I heard that support for Aperture was being discontinued and iPhoto was being replaced by a new application, Photos.

Needless to say, I was upset to hear that an application that I use almost daily was being fazed out, although Aperture will continue to work after the release of Photos.

I received the following email from Apple …

Dear Aperture customer,

Last June, we introduced the new Photos apps for iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, along with iCloud Photo Library, which lets you safely store all your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere.

When Photos for OS X launches this spring, Aperture will no longer be available for purchase from the Mac App Store. You can continue to use Aperture on OS X Yosemite, but you will not be able to buy additional copies of the app.

You can migrate your Aperture library to Photos for OS X, including your photos, adjustments, albums and keywords. I had looked at this software when I brought my first Mac, but I decided against purchasing it, despite already owning a copy of Adobe’s Master Collection CS4, which included Photoshop and Dreamweaver, which I use regularly.

After reading many forums and reviews, I realised that professional photographers had anticipated what was happening with Aperture, and how Apple were ‘dumbing down’ their top-line applications. Many had given up on Apple and swapped over to Adobe.

I grasped the nettle and purchased Lightroom earlier this year and decided that I wouldn’t use the built-in importer to get my photos from Aperture to Lightroom, mainly because some of the features I used would not transfer over to Lightroom.

I purchased the excellent Adobe Lightroom 5 Classroom In A Book and worked my way through the exercises. After completing the book, I realised that I ought to have moved over earlier and that Lightroom had nearly all the features of Aperture, and many more. The absent features, I soon found a way to achieve a similar result in Lightroom.

Over the last few weeks, I have started working my way back through my photo collection and importing them all into Lightroom. I am cataloging them using keywords and location and I am building up an extensive portfolio of photos. This is not a five-minute job and will take many months to complete, but I am enjoying the challenge.

The results of my efforts can be seen in my Flickr gallery under the ‘Pages’ tab in the right hand sidebar.

Related articles

10 Amazing Free Adobe Lightroom Presets (smashingapps.com)

Closing Aperture (onemanandhisblog.com)

Adobe Lightroom for iPhone and iPad updated with new features and improvements (appadvice.com)

Since I purchased my first Apple device, a MacBook Pro, over six years ago, I have used iPhoto and latterly Aperture to manage and edit my extensive photo collection.
