This phenomenon is known to meteorologists as &#8216;explosive\u00a0cyclogenesis&#8217; and often leads to high winds and heavy rain, or snow, if the temperature is low enough.<\/p>\n<p>On <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Boxing Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boxing_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Boxing Day<\/a> evening, this is exactly what happened as the &#8216;bomb&#8217; tracked across <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"North Wales\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Wales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">North Wales<\/a>, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"North Midlands\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Midlands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">North Midlands<\/a> and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"South Yorkshire\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Yorkshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">South Yorkshire<\/a>. Taken on December 27th 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The maximum pressure recorded was 1030.0 millibars at 00:08 on the 26th. This fell to 1004.7 millibars at 22:15 &#8211; a drop of 26.3 millibars in a little over 22 hours. This brought a short spell of rain around dusk, which quickly turned to snow after dark. The fall resulted in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Selston\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Selston<\/a> being almost cut off for a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, Selston is well gritted, sometimes\u00a0when it isn&#8217;t really necessary, but on this occasion, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Nottinghamshire\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nottinghamshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Nottinghamshire County Council<\/a> got it all wrong and no gritters were seen. Taken on December 27th 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The temperature hovered just above freezing all night, but the biting wind\u00a0chill of -5.2\u00b0C was the lowest recorded this year.
