{"id":4518,"date":"2014-09-12T21:13:42","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T20:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alanrowley.info\/?p=4518"},"modified":"2014-09-12T21:15:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T20:15:31","slug":"was-summer-2014-one-of-the-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alanrowley.info\/?p=4518","title":{"rendered":"Was Summer 2014 one of the best?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Meteorology\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meteorology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">meteorologists<\/a>, the year is split up into the following seasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spring &#8211; March\u00a0to\u00a0May<\/li>\n<li>Summer &#8211; June\u00a0to\u00a0August<\/li>\n<li>Autumn &#8211; September to November<\/li>\n<li>Winter December to February<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, at midnight on August 31st, the Summer of 2014 came to an end, but what sort of Summer did we have?<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter zemanta-img\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/78060750@N06\/14553942417\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured\" title=\"Pond on a summer morning\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3904\/14553942417_dae49b6dc3.jpg\" alt=\"Pond on a summer morning\" width=\"800\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pond on a summer morning (Photo credit: Alan Rowley Photos)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Temperature\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">temperature<\/a> over the Summer averaged 15.5\u00b0C, 0.4\u00b0C cooler than the warmest recorded so far in the five years that the Bracken House <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Weather station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weather_station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">weather station<\/a> has been in operation. The warmest Summer so far was in 2013. The coldest Summer was in 2012 when the average temperature was only 14.5\u00b0C. The highest temperature recorded in Summer 2014 was 27.6\u00b0C, and the coldest temperature was 5.3\u00b0C. The average high temperature was 20.2\u00b0C, 0.5\u00b0C below the record set in 2013. The average low temperature was 11.1\u00b0C, equal to the mean low for Summer.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Rain\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Rainfall<\/a> in Summer 2014 was 118.2 millimetres, well down on the high of 299.8 millimetres set in 2012. The average rainfall amount in Summer is 166.2 millimetres.<\/p>\n<p>Although the maximum <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Wind speed\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wind_speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">wind speed<\/a> in the Summer months was set this year at 34.5 mph, the wind speeds for the season were slightly below average at 3.0 mph, compared to the average of 3.4 mph.
