Violent thunderstorms starting around midday on Thursday 28th, made June the second wettest month recorded at Bracken House. A total of 20 millimeters of rain fell during the day to take the month’s total to 123 millimeters, relegating November 2009’s 118.4 millimeters to third place.<\/p>\n

The month’s total is still well short of the record of 151.8 millimeters set in April 2012, meaning that the two wettest months both fell in the first half of the year. As of today (29th June) a total of 386 millimeters of rain has fallen at the site, making it a possibility that the 2010 yearly record of 552.6 millimeters will be broken.<\/p>\n

The thunderstorms were so intense that in a ten minute period from 11:36 until 11:46, 10.4 millimeters of rain fell, peaking at 2.2 millimeters per minute at 11:41.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the rest of the UK, the north east was particularly badly affected with severe flooding around the Newcastle area causing landslips on the East Coast railway line forcing the line to close. Newcastle races were abandoned before the 4:00 pm race when the course was flooded in minutes and all communications with the track were lost temporarily.
