July 2017 became only the second month this year to record below average temperatures after January. Rainfall was lower than average and winds were lighter than normal. The average temperature in the month was 16.0°C, 0.2°C below the norm for July. The highest temperature was 27.3°C at 18:35 on the 6th, with the lowest being 8.8°C at 06:12 on the 17th. June 2017 continued the run of above average temperatures and was the warmest June so far recorded here. Winds were slightly stronger than average and rainfall totals were lower than the norm. The highest temperature in the month was 29.5°C recorded at 16:19 on the 19th, the highest temperature ever recorded in June here. This was also the highest temperature of 2017 so far and the highest since 30.1°C was recorded on July 19th 2016. March 2017 was the warmest March ever recorded here. Temperatures were 2.0°C above the average. Rainfall was above average and no snow or frost was recorded. This was the first March that the minimum temperature was above freezing. Winds were stronger than average. Mandarin brings some colour to the pond

Eighteen months after the last new bird visitor to the grounds of Bracken House, a mandarin made an appearance on the large pond bringing some much-needed colour. The bird, a male, was the 44th different bird species noted since recording started in February 2010. The mandarin arrived during the afternoon and seemed to enjoy swimming around with the pair of mallards who visit the pond almost every day. The resident moorhens weren’t too impressed with the new arrival and kept their distance. Mandarins were introduced to the UK from China and have become established following escapes from captivity. February 2017 was 2.5°C warmer than average, with a maximum temperature of 14.6°C. Rainfall was slightly below average and only 3.5 mm of snow was noted. Winds were average, even though an all-time record wind gust of 50 mph was recorded. The maximum temperature in the month was 14.6°C recorded at 13:46 on the 20th. December 2016 was dominated by high pressure, so much so that the month average of 1024.9 was the highest ever recorded here in December. The maximum pressure was 1043.9 millibars, recorded at 19:20 on the 27th, also a record high for December. This was the second highest pressure ever recorded here, beaten only by the 1044.6 millibars on February 7th 2012. Grey wagtail becomes 43rd bird species to visit

On the 3rd November 2016, a grey wagtail was seen perched on a chair on the patio. The bird was preening itself for a few minutes before flying off over the large field.
