{"id":3611,"date":"2013-11-28T14:26:45","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T14:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alanrowley.info\/?p=3611"},"modified":"2013-11-28T14:28:30","modified_gmt":"2013-11-28T14:28:30","slug":"drive-a-diesel-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.alanrowley.info\/?p=3611","title":{"rendered":"Drive A Diesel Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday (27th) I visited the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ecclesbourne Valley Railway\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecclesbourne_Valley_Railway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Ecclesbourne Valley Railway<\/a> at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Wirksworth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wirksworth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Wirksworth<\/a> for a &#8216;Drive A Diesel Day&#8217;. I won the prize in a competition run by local bus company <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Trent Barton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trentbarton.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Trent Barton<\/a>, who have teamed up with the Railway to offer combined tickets for 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The day started at 10:00 when myself and three other enthusiasts, who had travelled from the Blackpool area and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Severn Valley (England)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Severn_Valley_%28England%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Severn Valley<\/a>, met at Wirksworth station. We were shown the controls of a single car <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Diesel multiple unit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diesel_multiple_unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">diesel multiple unit<\/a>, number 55006, before we each took turns to drive the unit a few hundred yards down the track and back.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/78060750@N06\/11090554095\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured\" title=\"At the controls\" alt=\"At the controls\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3736\/11090554095_86101bddfa.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the controls (Photo credit: Alan Rowley Photos)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once we had familiarised ourselves with the controls, we were let loose on the full length of the line down to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Duffield railway station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duffield_railway_station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Duffield<\/a>. Although we only travelled at a sedate 25 mph, it felt much faster in this more powerful machine. The scenery around the line is beautiful and we saw many pheasants, who scattered as the train approached, and a few buzzards circling overhead.<\/p>\n<p>The day finished as darkness descended at 16:00.
