August 2020 was warmer than average (16.75°C versus an average of 15.61), wetter than average (70.20 mm versus an average total of 51.22) and windier than average (a wind run of 2424 miles versus an average of 2310).

The month was a tale of two halves – the first half being hot and dry with the second half being cold and damp. The highest temperature was on the 12th when the thermometer reached 32.0°C at 15:45. This was the highest August temperature ever recorded here and the third highest all-time temperature. The day before, the temperature had reached 31.6°C, beating the 30.0°C set on August 25th 2019. The lowest temperature was 7.0°C recorded at 07:05 on the 31st. The average monthly temperature was 16.8°C, 1.1°C above the August average and the highest average ever for the month. The average daily high temperature was 21.5°C, with the average daily low being 13.2°C, both August records. The warmest day was the 12th with an average temperature of 24.5°C and the coldest day was the 29th with an average temperature of 10.9°C.

The average wind chill in the month was 16.7°C and the average dew point was 13.6°C, a record for August. The high dew point was 21.8°C recorded at 14:23 on the 11th, also an August record. There were 180.75 hours of sunshine, 10.3 hours below the August average. The sunniest day was the 8th with 10.7 hours

Rainfall in the month totalled 70.2 millimetres, well above the August average of 52.9 millimetres. Rainfall was recorded on 16 days, with no snow. The yearly total is now 407.6 millimetres, 113% of the normal for the end of August. The wettest day was the 25th with 19.8 millimetres of rain being recorded, equalling the wettest day of 2020 set on February 9th. The highest rain rate was 33.8 millimetres per hour, recorded at 05:53 on the 25th.

Wind speeds were about average, with the highest wind gust speed of 45 mph being recorded at 16:59 on the 25th, the second highest gust of the year, beaten only by the 47 mph set on February 9th.. The maximum wind speed was 19 mph at 17:02 on the 25th. The wind run was 2423.9 miles, 61 miles below the August average. The average gust speed in the month was 5.4 mph, and the average wind speed was 3.3 mph. The predominant direction was southerly (172°).

The maximum high solar radiation recorded at 12:40 on the 2nd was 1190 w/m². The average solar radiation for the month was 154 w/m². The highest U.V. Index was 5.8.
