The first month of 2017 was drier and slightly cooler than average. Winds were much lighter than normal. December 2016 was dominated by high pressure, so much so that the month average of 1024.9 was the highest ever recorded here in December. The maximum pressure was 1043.9 millibars, recorded at 19:20 on the 27th, also a record high for December. This was the second highest pressure ever recorded here, beaten only by the 1044.6 millibars on February 7th 2012. On the 3rd November 2016, a grey wagtail was seen perched on a chair on the patio. The bird was preening itself for a few minutes before flying off over the large field. October 2016 was drier and less windy than average, with temperatures slightly below normal. There were no unseasonably warm spells in the month, although there were days with temperatures in the high teens. The highest temperature recorded in the month was 17.2°C at 16:32 on the 4th. The trend for above average temperatures continued into September 2016 which was the hottest so far recorded here. The month was also drier than usual with lighter winds. The temperature at 16:16 on the 13th reached 28.4°C, beating the previous September best of 27.8°C set on September 30th 2011. August 2016 was a month of above average temperatures and lower than average rainfall, despite over 35 millimetres of rain falling in the last 13 days. Winds were slightly higher than normal for the time of year. The highest temperature occurred on the 23rd at 17:00, when the thermometer reached 27.2°C, making it the second warmest day of the year, beaten only by the 30.1°C recorded on July 19th. While I was on holiday at Seahouses in Northumberland, I visited the nearby railway station at Chathill, arguably the smallest and least used terminus on the railway network. The station has only two arrivals and departures Monday to Saturday, with no service on Sunday. Although on the East Coast mainline, there are no services from Chathill heading north. Both services leave heading south to Newcastle or Hexham. In early July 2016, I made two trips to the Farne Islands to see the bird colonies, especially the puffins. As these photos show, I wasn’t disappointed.
